Check the loopback
Brushing can make almost any fleece feel soft on day one. Check the cloth underneath for dense loops, a steady knit and enough weight to recover after the elbows bend.

Check the rib
The collar, cuffs and hem take more strain than the body. Look for compact rib, reinforced joins and a neck insert that lies flat.
Those parts determine whether the sweatshirt keeps its shape after six months of wear.
